'Intimidating' callers demand credit card details

A council tax authority has warned on credit card scams. Homes across the UK are facing "aggressive and intimidating" phone calls from credit card fraudsters, it has been claimed.

The callers are believed to be posing as employees of the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) or local authorities.

VOA is a part of HM Revenue & Customs and is responsible for the property valuations from which council tax "bands" are set.

During the calls, residents are informed that they qualify for a rebate on their taxes and are then asked to supply their bank account or credit card numbers so that the transactions can be processed.

Genuine council tax authorities never ask people to give their credit card details over the phone.

Once they get the personal data, the callers can make payments on their victim's accounts or take out additional cards and loans.

Tim Eden, VOA director of council tax, said: "People must not pay any attention to these crooks and should report such calls to the police.

"Some of the callers are very aggressive and intimidating to make people pay up but people should not be fooled into thinking these calls are legitimate."
