Credit card customers advised on retailers

Customers concerned about having their cashback credit card declined by retailers have recourse to online help, new analysis has pointed out.

Holders of American Express (AmEx) products can use online forums and websites in order to maximise the value of the provider's offers, the Observer reported.

The sites, including whoacceptsamex.co.uk, include details on which retailers accept cards from the firm and which do not.

They reflect consumer concerns that some retailers allow Visa and MasterCard payments, but not AmEx payments.

Services currently carried by AmEx include the Platinum cashback credit card, which carries a market-leading reward offer.

A spokesman from the firm told the newspaper that more retailers are likely to accept the credit cards in future.

"Unlike our competitors, American Express directly manages the relationships with our card members and our merchants," he added.

"This means we can provide merchants with the opportunity to market directly to our card members and drive additional spending at their establishments."

The American Express Platinum card carries 5% cashback on purchases for new customers during the first three months of use.

After this period is over, the cardholder is moved on to a tiered payments system offering up to 1.25% cashback.

Other cashback credit cards currently on the market include the Egg MoneyWorld MasterCard.
